suddenly, hong kong

(December, 2005. Hunghom, Hong Kong.)

A bit sudden, but am in Hong Kong for two weeks. (One for work.)

You're looking at bamboo scaffolding, a standard in construction work here. I don't know how they do it either, but it's been this way since I can remember...

Katherine's told me about this implausible feat of structural engineering, and I've always found it fascinating ...

I don't know how they came up with it and why they keep using it, but it's worked for decades. Bamboo! Tied together! = Scaffolding!

Well, they came up with it because bamboo preceeded high strength-to-weight ratio steel pipes by a few hundred years, and they're still using it, because it is still *much* cheaper, especially when steel is in so much demand over the border in China. I'm just amazed that what is essentially a *grass* is able to serve in this capacity in the first place!
