make it work

(July, 2006. Upper West Side, New York.)

Sometimes you've just got to buy an iron if you don't have one.

be persistent

(July, 2006. Upper East Side, New York.)

That's what Marco Guerra said to me, we had a "coffee-and-chat, get-to-know-you" thing today, he's a friend of a friend. He didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but reinforced many things that I did, and was a source of encouragement.

"Do you have any family in New York?"
"No."
"I'll be your family."

It was the kindest and most reassuring thing anybody has said to me here.

everything really does happen in manhattan

(September, 2006. Roosevelt Island, New York.)

[And Jess sees all!]

There were two boats coming together on the river. We wondered if they were carrying out a Deal. Then we started looking out for snipers.
"Listen for anything."
"You know, if they wanted to shoot us, we wouldn't hear it."
"Yeah, they'd probably have silencers on."

don't you rain on my parade

(September, 2006. Midtown Manhattan, New York.)

Things are coming together, even if nothing is set. Much to look forward to. Right now, everything seems possible, even if it's going to storm again tomorrow.

rice

(June, 2006. San Francisco, California.)

I can be happy eating many things, but Asian food is still comfort food. Rice, some kind of dish, and soup/broth, even eaten at a restaurant, makes me feel centered and at home.

(Then add some tea, an orange, and some TV watching. But I think that's just something that happens with my specific family.)

wanderlust

(July, 2006. Outside Manhattan, New York.)

Kitty asked me where I was going next, and I said I didn't have any plans.

"But you're always going somewhere!"

I like that I'm staying put for right now, getting things going here, but... I want to look forward to some travel action too, and soon!

taken by surprise

(August, 2006. Between Woodbury Commons and Manhattan, New York.)

How can it be September already?

(FYI, the streaks are trees on the side of the highway, I shot while Katherine was driving.
This blog is getting chattier and chattier. It used to be just an image and a title. Again, what happened??)

if travel is searching and home what's been found i'm not stopping

(August, 2006. Los Feliz, California. / December, 2005. Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong.)

I want to go home, but I don't think Home exists in either place any more exactly.
I need to build a new one. It's just gonna take a little while.
